critique and evaluation question 1 critique and evaluate the validity of argument

Question 1
Critique and evaluate the validity of arguments in Ian Herberts article Its not just a fad
organic food is better for you, say scientists. Use the two articles (Supplementary Reading 1
and Supplementary Reading 2) as other perspectives on the issues, and synthesise them into
your writing. You need to cite your sources correctly using the APA format whenever you refer
to the articles. There is no need to cite any other external sources.
Your answer should include:
a) An introductory paragraph that identifies the writers thesis (using your own words as far
as possible). This can consist of a few short sentences, or a single all-encompassing
sentence that encapsulates the focus of the writers work. You need to state whether you
agree or disagree with the writers viewpoint, and provide brief reasons for your stand.
Your introductory paragraph should also contain a summary of the writers arguments.
You should state these briefly, enumerating them using signals such as firstly, secondly, etc.
b) Your own assertions about the ideas and issues in the reading, supported by your own
arguments and evidence drawn from the two supplementary readings, which agree or
disagree with specific points in the reading. You should recognise the authors claim,
reasons, evidence and assumptions.
c) A paragraph recognising the overall strengths and weaknesses of the authors
arguments. You should also suggest how he could make his arguments more convincing.d) A concluding paragraph that sums up your main points and gives a sense of cohesiveness
to the whole essay. Develop your position and assertions pertaining to the key issues using
the concession and refutation process.
Your essay must:
e) Be clearly written, logically organised and grammatically correct, incorporating in-text
citations and referencing. Correct grammar, tenses, and sentence structures will all
contribute towards the quality of your critique. The critique should demonstrate a good
understanding of the subject or issue, in a well-organised fashion, with both descriptive and
critical approaches. Employ resources to synthesise the perspectives of others.
