ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT Assessment type Case Study Due Date Sunday 6th August 2017 6.00pm (QLD time) Length 1500 words Weight 20% TASK When managing change, two critical assessments are needed at the onset of the change: 1. Assessment of the change; and 2. Assessment of the organisation. Consider an organisational change you have recently experienced or are experiencing, and discuss the two critical assessments needed at the onset of the change. Your paper should address the following: 1. Introduction and background to the change. 2. Brief explanation of the organisation, industry, and forces for change. 3. Analysis of the change or development. 4. Assessment of the change. This assessment examines the scope, depth and overall size of the change and includes: Scope of the change (workgroup, department, division, enterprise) Number of employees impacted Type of change (process, technology, organisation, job roles, merger, strategy) Level of change. 5. Assessment of the organisation. The second evaluation is an assessment of the organisation and includes: Culture and the value system of the organisation Capacity for change (and how much change is already taking place) Leadership styles and power distribution Residual effects of past changes Middle management’s predisposition toward the change Employee readiness for change. Writing the Case Study To learn from a case study analysis you will be analysing, applying knowledge, reasoning and drawing conclusions (Kardos & Smith 1979). Stages essential for analysing and writing a case study report may include: What is the context/background of the case study? What appears to be the problem (issues/risks etc.) inherent in the case? What tools will you use for your analysis? What else do you already know about this situation or this type of problem? What else do you need to know? Make recommendations and form conclusions. Please use the structure given below Presentation of the case study A case study analysis is usually presented as a report and will therefore contain many of the features and structure of reports in general. These include: Title page Executive summary – ( not included in word count ) Contents page Introduction – The introduction sets the context for the report. Summarise the brief (your task), briefly outline the case and focus on its significance, state the report’s aim(s) and describe how the report is organised. It is not usual to detail findings or recommendations in the introduction. Case study report body* – Many models and variations of the case study report exist. Ultimately, you need to decide how best to organise and explain the case, the methodology and the recommendations. Body should include : ( use sub headings ) Context Forces of change Assessment of change Assessment of the organisation Conclusions – Every report should include a concluding statement/s on the subject of the report and key recommendations in a summarised form. Key recommendations Reference list. I am happy for you to use the report format for Assignment rather than an essay format This is not a research report so no need for a methodology section. In this assignment you are expected to relate your experience of change to an organisation with which you are familiar. Where your work experience is minimal you can apply the task to other organisations you have encountered, such as a sporting, community or social institution.
