You will submit a content analysis of approximately 500 words. Instructions: Read the two articles by Caulfield et al. and Nisbet carefully. Choose a science-related topic that has received some coverage in the news media and search for at least 5 news stories about this topic using Factiva. Please choose a topic other than the health impact of Vitamin D supplements, which was the topic covered in the Caulfield et al article (feel free to choose a similar topic such as the health impact of another type of supplement). Factiva is available via the Ryerson Library website. Click Research Databases on the main page, select Newspapers from the subject menu, then select Factiva. By default, Factiva is set to search all publications in all parts of the world. I recommend you narrow your search by adjusting the settings for Sources: select Major news and business sources: Canada (add US as well if you wish). I also recommend that you set the timeframe for the past 3 months and if that does not yield many results, you can increase the timeframe to 6 months or a year. Next, code the news stories in a similar manner as Caulfield et al. by highlighting and taking note of the following: -the main themes or frames that are used in each news story -the number of instances in which the stories refer to specific scientists, studies or publications are -the tone of the coverage (supportive, critical, neutral) -whether the story emphasizes benefits or harms/risks (or gives roughly equal attention to both) Finally, write an analytical paper that includes (1) an opening paragraph in which you introduce your topic, discuss why you chose this topic, describe your method (your search terms, any exclusions you made, and the timeframe), and summarize your findings; (2) the main paragraph(s) should be analytical, providing a discussion of the themes/frames, sources, tone and benefits/harms as they apply in your study; (3) a conclusion in which you compare or relate your findings to the ideas discussed by Caulfield et al. and/or Nisbet. Evaluation: Content (10 points): refers to the degree to which your paper addresses all of the required elements of this assignment as well as the scope and depth of your analysis. Style (5 points): refers to spelling and grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, formatting (including citations), word choice, and tone (your paper should be written in academic voice although you may use the first person). Your paper should include a bibliography including any scholarly sources as well as news articles that you used or referred to in your paper. You do not need to include a title page or running head. Please double-space your assignment. Citations and bibliography should be in APA format.
