The plaintiffs claim that Texaco – which merged with Chevron in 2001 – spent three decades systematically contaminating one of the most bio-diverse regions on earth, poisoning the water, air and land. The plaintiffs allege that the pollution has created a “death zone†in an area the size of Rhode Island, resulting in increased rates of cancer, leukemia, birth defects, and a multiplicity of other health problems. They further allege that the oil operations in the region contributed to the destruction of indigenous peoples and irrevocably impacted their traditional way of life. Chevron vociferously fights the claims, charging that the case is a complete fabrication, perpetrated by “environmental con men†who are seeking to line their pockets with the company’s billions.

I don’t believe it is the same case in Ecuador. They made an impact and they did make a big change. There is however, a lot of fighting still to be done but the people were able to make a big impact on their country.

What I found interesting in the video was how the Ecuadoreans accomplished a milestone in 2008 when a court-appointed independent expert recommended that Chevron be liable for damages costing between $7 billion and $16.3 billion. In the documentary, people power has replaced weaponry such as vehement woman with cancer calls for justice before a crowd. Pablo Fajado is an Ecuadorean lawyer tells how the death of his brother has not stopped him from following the case. Over the course of three decades, Texaco dumped more than 18 billon gallons of disgusting wastewater into the Amazon rainforest and the corporation failed to follow simple environmental standards that were law in the United States at the time. Rates of leukemia, cancer, stillbirths, and skin disease have significantly increased among the local population, and still very little has been done. $6 billion is the cost of remediation alone. It is a moving tool not only for alerting the issue but for initiating a dialogue about how the cost of human and natural life should be weighed against the cost of oil.
