TOPIC:
The City of Bigton has experienced a significant increase in its population upwards to 25% in the last decade. The change has moved the population from 100,000 individuals to 125,000 individuals. Most of the new residents are Muslim and choose to live in Bigton because of its proximity to a new Mosque and Islamic Community Center. Moreover, Bigton is attractive due to the proximity to public transportation for the commute to NYC and its surrounding areas.
Discuss how this qualitative change in the city’s population might or might not affect the manner in which the police perform their duties. Also, consider what additional resources that the police chief may need to invest into over the next few years to make sure his department is available to address the changing demographics of Bigton.

Read Ch. 7 (“People at War)” in your textbook, The Way We Lived. What role did the poor, unmarried, and young played in the War for Independence. Why were they considered to be the most effective soldiers and indispensable to the success of the war effort? What roles did women and blacks play in the war? Do you think the United States would have been successful with an army more similar to that of Great Britain?

Classmate Amy: In Chapter 7, I found that after smaller terms of enlistment for most white “countrymen” would not re-enlist into the Continental army as they were “tired of serving” after fighting the French and Indians for so long. Washington knowing he needed to fill his ranks to win the Revolution began allowing those who were desperately poor, had been imprisoned in their own countries or within the colonies and fresh off the boats to America. These mostly unskilled, lower class soldiers were able to endure the culture of war more easily than those of accustomed domestic life. They were hungry for a chance to make a difference and hopefully better themselves with the promised pay fighting this countries war. These soldiers proved resilient, strong and proud even in the toughest of conditions, many refusing to desert for fears of disgrace.
As I read I saw that many woman were used as spies or messengers during the time of the Revolution. This they volunteered for themselves wishing to be helpful to the cause, their fathers, brothers and husbands in some way. As far as I could tell from the readings I did not see that they were indeed used on the battle field in any way though as I am sure those of rank felt it was deplorable conditions for the fairer sex. At home or off the front lines the females could have been used as nurses to the injured or ill.
I was surprised to find that black males were prevalent in the fight against the British. Some of these soldiers joined at their own free will, others enlisted by their masters to prevent themselves from having to fight. These men were successful, loyal and honorable soldiers. Many willing and able to re-enlisting when others would not dare. Or in times given the opportunity to fight as a traitor and refused even if others had. They fought hard for hopes of their own freedom from slavery and/or the betterment of their race in the eyes of their new country. The Continental Army would have not endured without them.
Yes, I do believe that had The Continental Army had the provisions, clothing and arms that the Great Britain Army did there would have been ease in filling the ranks as warranted. We may have seen the Revolution be shorter in time scale as it was better organized. With better organization the soldiers could have been better trained to handle the task ahead allowing them to be more successful in battles.
