According to Lotty et al. (2020), “trauma-informed care (TIC) is a strengths based framework that is grounded in an understanding of and responsiveness to the impact of trauma, that emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety for both providers and survivors, and that creates opportunities for survivors to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment” (p. 11).  It is essential to understand the true definition of TIC and what can result from the experience of trauma in one’s life. Knowing one’s definition of trauma can give significant incite as to why some people may seek therapy. Trauma can enter one’s life in many different ways, so it is important to understand how to overcome the several aspects of trauma. It is essential for the therapist to understand where the trauma comes from, when started it and how it is currently dealt with presently. Understanding these questions can assist in developing a healthy plan on working through present and future struggles in one’s life. According to Jewkes et al. (2019), “trauma filled behaviors which served them well in a threatening environment become problematic by impeding their capacity to function in a healthy environment, at school and in relationships in general. These difficulties can be long-lasting and may even worsen” (p. 74).

Stress and health are related in a variety of ways. Stress symptoms can affect one’s physical and mental health. The ability to recognize common symptoms of stress can assist in managing them and eradicating them in a healthy manner. Stress that is poorly managed and ignored can cause many health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and anxiety among other issues. According to Girmay et al. (2019), “stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you — and many things that you do yourself — put stress on your body. You can experience good or bad forms of stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts” (p. 15).

It is important to understand the meaning of stress when caring for a vulnerable population, especially as an APRN. Stress is viewed and exhibited in many different ways and it is essential to be able to distinguish a person in stress although they may present differently. Vulnerable populations such as people that have anxiety and depression may be experiencing these mental illnesses as a result of stress. As a future APRN, I must be able to recognize their stress and develop appropriate ways to overcome it, although it may be due to daily life experiences. Developing healthy treatment plans may be the difference from falling victim to increase stress or having control of it. According to Almen et al. (2020), “continuous and prolonged exposure to stressors or unsuccessfully dealing with such exposure has been suggested as a precursor for burnout. Cognitive– behavioral therapy and lifestyle change programs have included recovery activities as one out of several intervention components have been shown to reduce stress and burnout” (p. 185).

Response TWO

Trauma-informed care means treating a whole person, considering past trauma and the resulting coping mechanisms when attempting to understand behaviors and treating the patient (Withers, 2017). Trauma-informed care can help better understand a trauma victim’s behaviors. Everyone expresses emotions differently, so someone experiencing painful trauma may act out differently than the next person. Trauma is not well understood by the public so there is an empathy gap or lack of appropriate response to the victims of trauma. The importance of trauma-informed care is being able to be empathetic, listening, and supportive of the victim of trauma. The CDC statistics on abuse and violence in the United States report that one in four children experience some sort of maltreatment in the forms of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and one in four women experience domestic abuse. Assessing victims of these situations can be difficult for the victim and provider, so it is important for the healthcare provider to be mindful and realize many patients they come in contact with could be victims of trauma (Tello, 2019).

Health and stress are related because stress can directly impact your health. It affects your body, thoughts, feelings, and your behavior. It can contribute to many health problems as well such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes (Mayo Clinic, 2019). “The relationship between psychosocial stressors and disease is affected by the nature, number, and persistence of the stressors as well as by the individual’s biological vulnerability, psychological resources, and learned patterns of coping” (Schneiderman, Ironson, & Siegel, 2005). This states that the severity of the stressor and the persistence as well as the individual’s ability to cope with stressors influences how it will affect their health. Some people have better coping skills than others and may be able to handle the same stress that someone else cannot.

It is important for an APRN, to be aware of stressors and trauma-informed care as many patients that we meet may have had some sort of trauma. We also do not know how well they handle stressors and being mindful of their behaviors and attitude can help cue you through assessing this individual without causing increased stress or fear.  It may be difficult to determine if someone is stress or if they have experienced trauma if they don’t tell the APRN, but just being mindful of the possibility and helping the patient determine coping skills and resources that will best help them if they are dealing with psychological health concerns. If you do determine someone has experienced trauma or is severely stressed, listening and being supportive is essential in caring for this individual. Also, providing them the appropriate resources such as psychological providers could be detrimental their the well-being.
