Students will select and read a book related to business management.  The student can select any book-related directly or indirectly to business.

Four books I would highly recommend and that have been helpful to me throughout my career are:

1.     Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey

2.     First, Break All the Rules by Marcus Buckingham

3.     Good to Great by Jim Collins

4.     Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

DIRECTIONS

1.     Review the rubric attached to the assignment to ensure you understand the elements upon which this assignment will be graded.

2.     Choose a book related to business.  Read the book or listen to an audio version.  If you choose to listen to the book, determine a way to take notes on critical points as you listen.

3.     Write a 5-7 page double-spaced paper (approximately 1,500 to 2000 words) critical review of the book. Review the “Writing Standards” section of the syllabus for details on how to format your paper.

4.     The paper must include the following 3 sections.

a.     The first is a summary of the author’s main thesis and supporting arguments.

b.     Because this is a critical review, the second section should identify the key strengths and weaknesses of the book.  Identify key elements that you thought were particularly strong.  Also, comment on flaws or oversights in the author’s arguments or omitted information.

c.     Finally, the third section should include key insights you gained from the book.  Include ideas on how you can apply the book to your own personal and professional life.

5.     Upload your paper to Blackboard for grading by the due date shown in the syllabus.
