The product which I chose in MBA 560 was the Tesla Model 3. I was in the class before the model was announced, and I was suggesting a lower priced model for Tesla. The reasoning for the lower priced model is partly based on the demand for an environmentally friendly vehicle, and partly based on the furor regarding Tesla vehicles and the companies associated with them through their leader, Elon Musk.
Tesla has made electric vehicles fashionable. They started out with the Roadster, a very high-priced and high-performance vehicle. They then went to high-priced luxury vehicles, the Model S and Model X. The vehicles sold very well and performed very well. These vehicles created a fervor for Tesla vehicles, although they were out of the price range of most interested parties. The Model 3 is a more moderately priced vehicle, starting out at $ 35,000 rather than the $ 80,000 range for the Model S and Model X.
The reason that they will be more successful than their competitors is that they will have the Tesla engineering behind the models, the engineering that was developed for the higher priced vehicles and is at the point that the cost is coming down as the number of vehicles sold and developed rises. This means that the lower priced Tesla Model 3 will be more developed than the similarly priced vehicles from their competitors. Not just electric vehicles, but all vehicles.
I also anticipate that there will be an even lower priced vehicle produced by Tesla in the future, to compete with the lower priced hybrids and lower priced electric vehicles.
