At my current job at FedEx, my immediate supervisor lacked emotional intelligence in a sympathetic sense. We recently had one of the biggest snowstorms in New York City. My 18-month old daughter is usually in daycare when I go to work, but the daycare was closed during the blizzard. It was 0830 when I told my supervisor that I will be calling out because I did not have anyone to watch my daughter. My supervisor said that I must come in due to the fact that they are short-staffed and my position as the office administrator was important to be there to control all aspects of the office needs. I informed him once again that I could not come in without a sitter or will not bring my daughter with me through the blizzard to the office. He was being unreasonable and did not understand my dilemma. He told me that he would write me up if I did not show up to work. I was forced to speak to the senior leadership. When I called his boss, he informed me that the station will be shutting down operations by noon, and that there was no reason for me to come into work or for my supervisor to force me to come in. I was relieved but also upset at my supervisor. It made me realize that future situations similar to this will lead to disagreements between my supervisor and me. I will have to fully express my concerns and conflicts with him therefore we could have a better work relationship.
