The topic of your annotated bibliography should fall within the following three areas of public health and communities studies and does not need to link to the topic of your research proposal (assessment two), although working on a similar topic for both assessments will allow you to develop expert knowledge.

Background
Before a piece of research can be undertaken it is first necessary to plan and develop a research proposal. This task cannot be completed without carrying out a comprehensive literature search and review. Undertaking a literature search and reviewing various sources of information is an essential task for several reasons. First, and most obviously, research is a tricky and complicated business and in order to secure approval for a study, one must show that there is a need to carry out research and that the benefits of carrying out the study outweigh its risks and the investment of financial and time resources. The need for the study, and its potential significance, can only be shown by reviewing current literature and evaluating what we already know about a specific topic. For topics that are under-studied an extensive consultation of background literature can help researchers sharpen the focus of their study and generate ideas about what to study and how.

An annotated bibliography is a distinct academic writing genre. Its purpose is to direct the reader to a number of literature sources that are relevant to a specific (research) topic. Your reader will want to know how each literature source relates to the specific topic, that is worthy of further investigation, and why it is credible. An annotated bibliography shows your understanding of why and how each literature source you have consulted is of use to a researcher wanting to add to what we already know about a specific area within the wider field of public health and communities studies.
