‘‘Health education is a vital component in promoting individual and community health.’’ (Edelman, Kudzma, &Mandle,2013). One of the key role of nurses is to give
education to patient and their family,the nurse uses this avenue to shear scientific knowledge on health to them to improve their health status.
The use of teaching principles, learning styles,teaching methodologies in health education is to help the nurse deliver
information to the patient and family in a way they will understand. For it is when there is understanding that the individual can voluntary make a health
decision that will bring a positive change in their health. For example, using the learning strategies given by VARK; visual, Aural, Reading/write and Kinesthetic.
(VARK.,2016), the health care provider will use a learning strategy that the patient learns best with to promote understanding and participate. The use of
the models helps to assess the patient to know their values, cultural believes, and their readiness to accept the teaching.
Health care providers can overcome differing points of view regarding health promotion and disease prevention by taking into consideration
the goals of health education which is to “help individuals, families, and communities achieve, through their own actions and initiative, optimal state of
health. Health education facilitates voluntary actions to promote health “. (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle,2013). Lastly, we must accept and acknowledge the cultural believes
and values of other people. For example, what may be culturally accepted by one person may not be accepted in another person’s culture vice versa. Using this
approach will bring oneness and understanding as we work together as a team to promote health in our various communities.
