Case:
Beth
Beth is 58 years old and lives alone in Mount Gambier, South Australia. She works as a school support officer and has recently dropped to part-time work in preparation for an early retirement (at age 60). Her husband of 30 years died five years ago and her two adult children, and their families live in Adelaide and Sydney. She has been unable to visit them in the past year.
Until two years ago Beth was very active in community roles particularly in the sporting community. She has a long history of volunteering at the local football and netball club as a coach and umpire for over 20 years. Beth played competitive netball in the local C grade side and found that was a great way to keep fit and stay social. However, over the last few seasons several players moved away. The team gradually became younger and Beth found it difficult to keep up with their speed of play. As a result, she stopped playing.
Three months ago, she became concerned her knee was increasingly stiff and sore every day. After seeing her GP she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Reflecting on this time Beth also realised shed been feeling unsteady on her feet for a while and had several stumbles around the house. Her remaining friends from the netball club have told her they are concerned that shes seeming less confident than she used to. Beth also admits she feels less fit since stopping netball and can tell her balance has been starting to decline.
Beth understands physical activity can help her to manage her condition but is looking for an activity that will increase her cardiovascular fitness and better understand how she can improve her balance. Shes open to trying new activities and would love to make some new friends of her own age.
