a. Read the article again to understand what the main claim, or argument is. It might even be in the headline.
b. Once you understand the claim, start to identify what the grounds are for the claim what are the reasons, facts or evidence the article presents to support the claim? Do you think these grounds are good? Are they based on good sources?
c. Once you have considered the grounds, think about the logical reasoning (i.e. warrant) the article is using. Ask yourself what links the grounds to the claim? Is the link logical? Do you accept their reasoning?
d. Once you understand what the reasoning is, see if they offer any backing, or evidence, for this reasoning. If they dont offer any backing, do you think that is OK? Perhaps you think the reasoning is obvious or well known.
e. Next consider whether the article is offering a balanced point of view. Are there any statements in the article that could be considered as rebuttals alternative viewpoints? Do they concede certain points (accept these other arguments), or do they refute them (argue against these other arguments).
f. Finally consider whether there are any qualifiers in the article. Are there statements that adjust the strength of the argument such as probably instead of definitely, or most rather than all? Does this make it more or less convincing?
3. Now consider all the parts of your analysis. Do you think the article presents a strong argument or a weak argument? What parts do you think are good and why? What parts are not so good and why? What is your overall conclusion about the article?
4. Once you have completed your critique, and decided on your own conclusion, you now need to prepare your presentation. Good tips for presentations include:
a. Make sure what you are saying (your script) aligns with what is presented on the slides.
b. use good audio-visual aids: you are expected to use powerpoint for your presentation. Powerpoint helps you remember what to say, clearly shows the audience your key points, and can be used for interesting pictures, graphs, diagrams or other representations of ideas, beyond just words. Try not to put too much on one slide, it should help your audience understand, not overwhelm them!
c. Timing: be realistic about the amount of information you present per slide. You will probably only need about five to 10 slides.
d. Clear content and structure: Decide on the main points you need to get across (e.g. summarise the article, show your analysis, reach a conclusion). Think about what order you are presenting your information in. Make sure you are clear to your
audience what they can expect (give a short introduction). A short summary or conclusion at the end then makes sure you leave your audience with a clear take home message.
5. You must provide the full reference (in APA style) for your chosen article within your presentation slides.
