The personal mentoring and coaching techniques I utilize most effectively with my mentee throughout the relationship are effective communication and shadowing. Emphasizing dialogue and routine communication drives engagement between the mentor and mentee while serving as the foundation for aligning expectations, overcoming challenges, and achieving short and long-term goals (Dobrowolska & Balslev, 2017). The coaching technique that I have witnessed to produce the most progress is the shadowing method. Shadowing allows mentee’s independently assessed their job knowledge and ability to perform critical tasks while observing an experienced subject matter expert execute essential functions (Dolot, 2018). Shadowing gives the mentee a first-hand look at what a career in their desired field will look like and solidifies goals or acts as the impetus for adjustments as needed. As I continue to mentor personnel in the future, communication will continue to be the backbone for effective relationship building, establishing individual development plans, and analyzing progress. Another technique I would utilize is finding opportunities for my mentee to work in focus groups and lead team discussions to enhance perspective and gain additional personal and professional development ideas. A strategy that I would adjust to is how much autonomy and independence are provided during on-the-job activities. Too much independence early on can hinder education and promote a lack of motivation. The short and long-term goals to include completing on-the-job training programs, field deployments, and ultimately being selected for a full-time position are achievable. The mentee has completed the first short-term goal and progressively gains more experience and skills to make him competitive for future vacancies and achieve his long-term goal.
