TIPS FROM INSTRUCTOR:

In a single paragraph the first sentence must be the (M) main topic, followed by the (E) evidence that supports your topic (which is really taking a stand on something). ALL evidence MUST contain a source.  Evidence must be followed by (A) analysis. The analysis consists of analyzing the evidence that you provide. Analysis does not have to contain a source, but the analysis must use analysis type of working verbs (i.e. Bloom’s taxonomy). You must cover ALL the letters of MEAL i.e. the M, the E, the A and the L in every paragraph in order for your paragraph to be properly structured. MEAL must be presented in sequence M -> E -> A -> L. There can only be one (1) main topic in a paragraph and that main topic must start the paragraph. Generally I am looking at a minimum of three pieces of evidence to support your main topic. The evidence should contain a compare and contrasting view relative to your main topic i.e. (M) The sky is blue. (E) According to Smith (2016) the sky is blue because it is a reflection of the ocean water. According to Jones (2016) the sky is blue due to space being black and with the sun’s rays gives the appearance of blue. (compare and contrast). (A) The preponderance of the evidence shows that the sky’s color is a direct reflection of the ocean (analysis is meant to persuade the reader to your point of view). (L) The is ocean is blue due to the shorter wavelength of light when compared to the other colors of red, orange and yellow. (Link to the next main topic).
