Good evening class,
The five modes of transportation consist of the following: Road Transportation, Rail Transportation, Pipelines, Maritime Transportation, and finally Air Transportation. Each of these modes of transportations have unique safety issues associated with them.
The road transportations has a variety of safety related issues from traffic lights to specific laws and vehicle regulations that assist with ensuring safety. More specifically, every driver who operates on the road must obtain a specific license that ensures that driver is safe to operate the vehicle.
The Rail Transportation industry in a very unique industry; more specifically because it provides a unique style of transportation in which it is used typically with heavy loads of equipment therefore the safety requirements are strict. At least 50% of the train’s must be equipped with power or train brakes so the engineer can manage speed of train (49 U.S. Code 20302 – General requirements, 2016).
The pipeline industry is the most undercover (literally) transportation that is used in today’s logistics. A very unique safety issue that this industry possess is in regards to the Oil and Spill Prevention Response Plan in which it states No person may transport oil subject unless a written plan sets forth where it will be discharged and used (PART 130—OIL SPILL PREVENTION AND RESPONSE PLANS , 2016).
The Maritime Transportation industry is very unique in that it travels internationally, and in some cases it falls under the United Nation Law of the Sea. This is unique because, as roads have traffic lights, transportation vessels use flags to identify themselves, to denote stress, etc. This safety mechanism helps other vessels steer clear or deliver assistance if needed.
Lastly the Air transportation, this industry particularly has more safety related issues than others from pre-flight checks to the individual pilot who operates the plane. The standalone plane has many safety features such as annual inspections, 100 hours inspections and Altimeter inspection.
If we are looking at groups and identifying safety related issues, I would have to group together road, rail and air transportation. These three groups have a higher trend to transport passengers therefore the need of passenger safety is higher. I would also say this group owns the majority of accidents therefore needing additiuonal safety. The other two being Maritime and Rail, which transport a very large variety of cargo in which safety must be addressed in order to minimize safety related issues.
R/S,
Michael Castillo

In the realm of hazardous materials there are several safety hazards to be concerned with. Each mode of transportation has their own individual concerns and shared concerns as well.
Maritime transport has a special concern when items are not listed correctly on the manifest. What can happen is that a hazardous material can leak and contaminate other containers that are below it. Also if they leak they can combine with other hazardous materials and create a worse situation with toxic gases or explosive hazards.
Trains have special concerns because they may derail or collide causing explosive or toxic conditions. This is similar to truck transportation but in larger quantities. Another special circumstance is the loading and unloading of intermodal containers. During this time containers with hazardous waste need to be handled with extreme caution, so as not to damage or cause a mixture of hazardous materials.
Trucks are by far the most popular form of transport. During this method of transport the obvious concern is collision or accident that causes a hazardous material incident. The other main concern is unlicensed carriers hauling hazardous material.
For air transport it has all these same issues. It is especially sensitive though because if an accident happens up there in the skies it is deadly. In some rare cases hazardous materials are transported on passenger aircraft. Items such as lithium ion batteries. If other items are not on the declaration properly then this can pose extreme risks.
The main concern over all modes is the improper manifesting of hazardous material. If it is not coded correctly then they may be transported incorrectly by the incorrect type of carrier.

Good evening Michael,
Really good job on your post this week. You brought up a very good point in regards to maritime shipments. I can only imagine that shipments are mis marked, whether on purpose or on accident, and when that happens there is potential for an accident which will be treated in correctly because it was labeled incorrectly. How would you feel as a first responder and the material you were attending to was incorrect. Your point on unlicensed drivers is absolutely correct. I cannot tell you how many times I hear about vehicle accidents where the driver was not licensed correctly. Goo
