The marketing concept and the “4 P’s” are two things that can go hand and hand. Marketing concept is getting two things done at once. What it is getting done is striving to meet the consumers’ needs while also trying to reach organizational goals (Kerin & Hartley, 2016). The “4 P’s” that then come into place are: product, price, promotion, and place. A company that shows this is “Bic Mechanical Pencils”. This can be marketed to high school and college students to help with homework and tests. The price range is from $3.99 to $6.99. The promotion always runs in ads in the paper and on TV. The place that this is found is in any store that sells office supplies. This is a marketing concept because both the consumer and business win.

Marketing is basically meeting the needs of the customer. This is done by communication, creating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that can be a benefit to a customer or a consumer (Kerin & Hartley, 2016). Sales are an exchange of something for money. These two a very different because marketing is something that is being done to meet the needs of a customer and benefit the customer where in sales is done to benefit the company. These two are also dependent on each other because you cannot have a sale without first marketing looking out for what the customer needs. You cannot have a sale without a need/want first.

Marketing does need to be something that needs to happen in the church. We need to promote our church well to see that we care about its congregation. By doing things such as: printing a bulletin, putting announcements on the screen, advertising if there is an event going on, etc, the good news is ultimately being spread in a good way. By investing in these things, it shows people that the church is serious about spreading the good news and keeping them updated on things going within the church. Now this is something that needs to be done tastefully, though, and made sure it does not put on a full production that it out shadows truly what the message of Jesus is.

Generational cohorts are a big factor when it comes to business and management. Baby boomers are the first sets of cohorts and they are children born between 1946 and 1964. They are most of our parents and they are retiring quickly.  The next set of cohorts are Generational X and they are born from 1965-1976. Generational X cohorts are self-reliant, supporting of racial diversity and better educated.  Generational Y follows with those who are born from 1977 to 1994, which are also referred to as millennials. The millennials have increased the next generation of births and they are influenced by music, sports, computers and video games. This generation is also more “tech-savy”.

Viagra is an ad that usually is something that everyone knows about. This is intended for the Baby Boomers and even some of the Generation X (but more so baby boomers). This type of drug is something to help enhance a better sex life. Due to age, sometimes things don’t work the way it is supposed to, so this drug is used to help those who are up in age have a better sex life.

Hebrews 13:8 states that “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever”. This can relate to generational cohorts because no matter what age difference and what differences we may have due to our ages, Jesus Christ will always be the same. This also can pertain to values we learn as children, as well. When we grow older, those values should not change because of our age or our generational differences.

According to Kerin and Hartley (2016), marketing is a creative activity that “communicates, delivers, and exchanges offerings to benefit the consumers, organization, stakeholders, and society”. The goal of marketing is to obtain sales. Sales are usually defined in a monetary or unit quantity. Sales is said to mean “if profits are acceptable, a firm may elect to maintain or increase its sales even though profits may not be maximized” (Kerin and Hartley, 2016) This idea is seen through the marketing concept.

The marketing concept says that an organization should try to satisfy the customer’s needs while at the same time also managing the organization’s goals. In the terms of a cliché, you could say that they are killing two birds with one stone. They are giving the public what they want while at the same time achieving what they want as a company.

Companies can achieve the marketing concept through the four Ps; which are Product, Price, Promotion, and Place. Product deals with providing your customers with a good, service, or idea that will satisfy their needs and/or wants. Price is how you buy the product, usually money is this medium, though bartering was once used. Promotion is a way for the seller to advertise and communicate with the buyer, this can be through many different mediums; commercials, bill boards, magazine advertisements, etc. And lastly, place is how the seller gets the product to the customer, this could be through trains, airplanes, eighteen wheelers, vans, etc.

I would say the companies that use the 4 Ps of marketing the most are restaurants. The one that comes to mind specifically is McDonald’s. McDonald’s has to create a product that the public will want. They should create additional items so that they will keep the public’s interest so that they may remain in business. They must be innovative while at the same time keeping it at a price the public is willing to pay. According to businesscasestudies.co.uk, “the danger of using low price as a marketing tool is that the customer may feel the quality is being compromised”. This is especially crucial in the food industry that the customers believe they are getting quality food. For promotions, McDonald’s seems to use commercials, billboards, coupons, and magazine advertisements to get the word out about their new product or deals. Marketing is such a huge part of their sales. For their advertisement, they hire professional food stylists to make their food look appetizing so that people will want to try it. Place is “not just about the physical location or distribution points for products” (businesscasestudies.co.uk). It is also how the management portray their products and services and the end goal of bring the product to the consumer and keeping them happy and wanting more.

Marketing and sales are dependent on one another because you need marketing to advertise your product to sell the product. You need to have sales to know what the consumer is interested in and if they approve of the product. This is so the company can create another product and repeat the process.

A problem marketing must overcome is how to advertise to the different generations. The text talks about three types of generational cohorts. The first one is called the Baby Boomers. These are people born between 1946 and 1964. The next cohort is Generation X. These include people born between 1965 and 1976. And the last cohort is Generation Y, also known as Millennials. These are people born between the years 1977 and 1994.

Values for Generation X include “achievement, work, efficiency, and material comfort” (Kerin and Hartley, 2016). According to Kerin and Hartley (2016), Millennials value “personal control, continuous change, equality, individualism, self-help, competition, future orientation, and action”. Another one is “sustainability and preserving the environment” (Kerin and Hartley, 2016).

An advertisement broadcasted towards the Generation Y or Millennials is from Chipotle. Chipotle is known for their farmed fresh and non-GMO produced food. In the image, it shows a wrapped burrito on one side and a taco on the other. In the middle, it says farewell to GMOs. This is broadcasted towards Millennials because they care about preserving the environment and animals. Chipotle is a brand that has done right when listening to the consumers wants.

And lastly, to tie this concept in to the Christian community, I believe that marketing does have a place in the church. Without advertising the church and community events; the church would not gain new members and help bring people to Christ. My mom is a graphic designer for our church, so this is essentially her job. She creates the bill boards and signs that the public will see so they can visit and attend our church.

The Bible describes in Hebrews 13:8 that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”. This relates to out generational cohort discussion above because the values Jesus portrays will stay the same against time. He is a constant in our ever-changing world. He is something all generations can experience in a unique manner. He is advertised as something for everyone.

Aafia Siddiqui is an unusual case, after reading about her in several sources. Mrs. Siddiqui was found guilty of attempted murder and several other things, but not terrorism. But, that still leaves the question at hand, is she a terrorist? I am conflicted with the interpretation as even in our text there is not one set standard on what the definition of terrorist is. Is terrorism a threat of violence against people for political purposes (White, 2017), yes. Did Aafia do this? I am not quite sure of that. There is much controversy around her as she has a large time gap of being missing, from 2003-2008 to be exact (Di Giovanni 2014). Aafia was an MIT graduate, wife, mother and person that many spoke highly of. She is faced with being an Al Qaeda sympathizer, and FBI was watching her after contributions to Islamic charities became suspicious, (Di Giovanni, 2014). Aafia was found guilty of the attempted murder of Americans serving in Afghanistan, but her defense holds ground that there is not forensic proof that Siddiqui fired the gun (Gendar, 2010). I cannot clearly define her a terrorist, but her indicators of behaviors and her trial do point her in the direction of being in lines with it. Isis and the Taliban are requesting her trade because she became a popular figure, not just in Pakistan, but the U.S. “What is unclear is whether these groups ISIS and the Taliban are doing this out of sincerity-because she is Muslim woman being held under conditions which violate international law and U.S. Constitution on cruelty” (Di Giovanni, 2014). For these groups, she is now a martyr, whether she is or is not a sympathizer to their beliefs and political standings. “Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. “(Romans 13:2).

A terrorist is a person who uses violence and coercion to persuade sovereign nations and its citizens to meet their demands. Terrorist organizations use their fear of being hard to detect and devastating damages to reach their political goals. “It does perhaps need updating because events like 9/11 in the USA in 2001, the two Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, 3/11 in Madrid in 2004, and 7/7 in London in 2005 have shown that contemporary terrorists certainly do want a lot of people dead”(Howie-5). They can only achieve victory when they make an impact that affects thousands of people. Ms. Aafia Siddiqui is a prime example Furthermore, Aafia Siddiqui with her background and history I would classify her has a terrorist. She has multiple nexus between her and several terrorist organizations. She was supporting them in either a connection with the United States or financially or just because of her status. She was known as the “Lady of Al-Quada” and the face of one of the most prominent terrorist organizations in the world. She was sentenced to 86 years in prison for when she attempted to kill United States military members overseas. Moreover, I believe the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant  would want to attempt to trade her because of the long history she has with these terrorist organizations. Furthermore, they believed that they had someone important enough to possibly open the door to the trade. To them, she may seem an important asset that would be a fair trade for the people they have captured. All civilized nations in the world need to come together to combat terrorism. We need to have a unification and understanding that there are basic human rights and that no one should live a day in this world under fear or suppression. Likewise, Ms. Aafia Siddiqui is an example of a person who could have been a very successful in this world but she turned down the path of evil. “Poor management of terrorism will create more barbaric acts that will be difficult to control” (Saab-15). Terrorism is one of the crimes that the world should recognize as an unspeakable act that cannot go unpunished. We must not waiver or give in to terrorist demands as our rights and freedoms are infringed.
