(Las preguntas al final del caso les podrían ayudar también en su análisis y a desarrollar suspuntos de vista sobre los problemas de supervisión contenidos en este caso).  CASO: CONFLICTO CULTURAL EN MÉXICO, AL SUR DE LA FRONTERA Jim Sanders, un gerente de distribución de una compañía manufacturera de enseres de cocinaen Estados Unidos, fue asignado recientemente a trabajar en Guadalajara, México, en la plantaregional de manufactura y distribución.  Su jefe, el gerente regional Carlos Puente, también asignadoa Guadalajara, es mexicano así como todos sus compañeros de trabajo y subordinados. Jim lleva en Guadalajara sólo unos meses pero ya tiene varias preocupaciones mayores. El recuerda que a sullegada, él se sentía muy entusiasmado y optimista sobre su oportunidad de trabajo en México,sintiendo que se había ganado el mundo.  Ahora Jim se cuestiona si tendrá algún tipo de éxito.            Jim vino a México sintiéndose muy confiado de su estilo gerencial que le había producidomuchos éxitos en los Estados Unidos y que le permitiría alcanzar igual nivel de desempeño enMéxico.  Él tenía grandes destrezas en resolver problemas, le encantaba zambullirse en los problemasy atacarlos abierta y directamente.  Basándose en sus pasados éxitos con grupos de trabajo en losEstados Unidos, él esperaba que al involucrar a todo el personal de ventas en México en el proceso dedeterminar las mejores maneras de vender los enseres de cocina, la compañía alcanzaría uncrecimiento de dobles dígitos fácilmente.  Ciertamente el personal local de ventas estaría en la mejorposición de saber cómo dirigir el negocio en sus respectivos distritos de ventas.             Por lo tanto, en la primera reunión con su personal de ventas, más que decirles qué era lo queél pensaba se debería hacer, Jim le hizo la pregunta al grupo con la intención de abrir una discusión. Fue entonces que Jim se dio cuenta de que sus empleados mexicanos podían ser muy callados. Después de un rato, Jim sintió que él necesitaba generar la discusión y presentó sus ideas sobreutilizar más publicidad mediante vallas publicitarias (“billboards”). El grupo se avivó repentinamentey con entusiasmo apoyó la idea.  Luego surgió un silencio ensordecedor. El proceso se repitió variasveces hasta que Jim decidió terminar la reunión y se retiró a su oficina muy frustrado. Se sintió muyinfeliz de encontrarse en esta situación rodeado de un grupo de empleados vagos, sin ningunainiciativa o que eran incompetentes e incapaces de hacer buenas sugerencias.             Pero los empleados de Jim no eran su sola preocupación.  Su jefe, Carlos, parecía comportarsede manera fría y brusca con él últimamente—ciertamente ya no era la persona hospitalaria y amableque él recordaba en sus primeras interacciones.  Quizás este cambio en la conducta de Carlos empezóvarias semanas atrás durante una reunión del grupo gerencial regional, durante la cual Jim se quejó deotros gerentes mexicanos por llegar 10 a 15 minutos tarde debido a su frustración por no empezar lareunión a tiempo.  O quizás él estaba correcto al sentir un poco de tensión durante esa reuniónconducida por Carlos, el más alto gerente, cuando Jim presentó algunas ideas de cómo mejorar variasáreas funcionales de las operaciones regionales en México incluyendo aquellas que no pertenecían asu grupo de trabajo—dichas ideas había funcionado muy bien en Estados Unidos.  Después de hacerlo que a él le parecieron sugerencias muy acertadas durante reuniones subsiguientes, la relación deJim y su jefe pareció enfriarse aún más.            Jim empezó a temer que las operaciones de la compañía en México estaban destinadas alfracaso en una cultura indolente, incompetente y muy burocrática. Sin embargo, cuando él monitoreóel desempeño real de la operación, se sintió asombrado de que esta parte de la compañía demostrabafuertes ganancias y gran crecimiento. Jim pensó que quizás había algo mal consigo mismo, que él noservía para una asignación internacional después de todo. El sintió que su asignación de tres años enMéxico se alargaba ante sí como un eterno potencial de fracaso.  Peor aún, se preguntó cómo suinminente fracaso en esta importante asignación internacional podría dañar sus futuras oportunidadesdentro de la compañía.                   Preguntas para Analizar y Discutir el Caso […]
