Significance of Emotional Intelligence in Workplace Productivity
Significance of Emotional Intelligence in Workplace Productivity
Research Question
The research topic being explored delves into the importance of intelligence in
increasing productivity in the workplace. Specifically, it aims to uncover how emotional
SIGNFICANCE EMOTIONAL INTRLLIGENCE IN WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY 2
intelligence influences employee’s productivity within a work environment. The main research
question guiding this study is “How does emotional intelligence impact employee productivity in
the workplace?” To address this question a mixed methods approach incorporating both
quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques has been chosen as the
research methodology.
Within this study two opposing hypotheses have been developed to examine the
relationship between intelligence and workplace productivity. The null hypothesis (H0) suggests
that there is no correlation between intelligence and workplace productivity implying that
emotional intelligence does not influence employee productivity. On the hand the alternative
hypothesis (H1) proposes that there is an association between emotional intelligence and
workplace productivity (Ivanov et al., 2020). According to this hypothesis higher levels of
intelligence among employees are linked to increased productivity in the workplace. This study
seeks to explore and understand the relationship between intelligence and workplace
productivity. By utilizing a mixed methods approach and investigating these hypotheses this
study aims to contribute insights into how intelligence can enhance employee productivity across
different organizational settings.
Research Approach
This study aims to gain an understanding of the link between emotional intelligence and
workplace productivity by using a mixed methods approach. This approach combines qualitative
methods to capture all the nuances that a single method may miss (Navas et al., 2022). By
gathering measurements and conducting analysis through quantitative data collection we can
establish patterns and correlations that shed light on the nature and strength of the relationship
between emotional intelligence and workplace productivity (Weyant, 2022). At the time
SIGNFICANCE EMOTIONAL INTRLLIGENCE IN WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY 3
qualitative data collection, which involves interviews and ended questionnaires allows us to
delve deeper into employees experiences, perceptions and qualitative aspects of emotional
intelligence, in the workplace. This approach helps us examine the underlying mechanisms and
contextual factors that influence this relationship (Ivanov et al., 2020).
These insights offer an understanding of the findings allowing us to grasp how emotional
intelligence operates in real workplace settings. The research methodology employed here is
based on pragmatism, an approach that emphasizes practicality and the use of methods to
effectively address real world issues. Pragmatism aligns well with the mixed methods approach
as it encourages researchers to be practical selecting methods that best suit their research
questions and goals (Supramaniam & Singaravelloo 2021). This approach recognizes that social
science research questions often have dimensions and can benefit from both qualitative
perspectives. In this study we take a stance to not provide theoretical insights but also offer
practical solutions and recommendations, for improving workplace productivity through a better
understanding of emotional intelligence.

work environment. By using questionnaires, interviews and workplace observations
Bhaskaran examines how levels of intelligence impact the productivity of software
professionals.
This study is a resource for our research proposal as it provides insights into the unique
context of software professionals’ workplaces in Kerala. We can incorporate the data and
findings from this study into the Literature Review section of our proposal to provide
context and evidence regarding the influence of EI on productivity. Furthermore, we can
draw inspiration from Bhaskaran’s research methodologies such as surveys and
interviews while discussing our methodologies for data collection and analysis in our
proposal. By adopting methods like Bhaskaran’s study, we aim to gain an understanding
of how emotional intelligence affects productivity, in real world work settings.

The book titled “Research Design; Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods
Approaches,” by John W. Creswell is an insightful resource that offers an overview of
research design considerations across different methodologies. It covers qualitative,
quantitative, and mixed methods approaches making it highly valuable for researchers
who want to understand the complexities of mixed methods research. Creswell, an expert
in research methodology provides a structured framework for designing studies that
includes discussions on formulating research questions, selecting data collection methods
and analyzing data.
This source is crucial for guiding the sections of research design and methodology within
the context of a research proposal. Firstly, it can be utilized as a resource to develop the
rationale for choosing a mixed methods approach to explore the relationship between
intelligence and workplace productivity. It offers guidance on how to integrate
quantitative data collection and analysis techniques in line with the proposed research
strategy. Secondly this book assists in explaining aspects of research design
considerations while ensuring that the chosen methodologies align with the research
objectives and questions at hand. Furthermore, it serves as a reference in the Methods
section, by aiding in decision making regarding the design of data collection instruments
and analysis techniques.
3. Dincă, V. M. (2022). Emotional intelligence–a Romanian qualitative study. In Proceedings of
the International Conference on Business Excellence (Vol. 16, No. 1, pp. 15-21).
The study conducted by Dincă focuses on intelligence among individuals, in Romania.
Although it does not specifically examine workplace productivity, the research explores
the aspects of intelligence within a specific cultural and societal context. It provides
SIGNFICANCE EMOTIONAL INTRLLIGENCE IN WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY 6
insights into how people in Romania perceive and define intelligence shedding light on
their interpretations, beliefs, and attitudes towards this concept. By taking an approach
the study offers a nuanced understanding of the contextual dimensions of emotional
intelligence.
Within the context of our research proposal Dincăs qualitative study can serve as a
resource for informing the component of our mixed methods approach. While not directly
focused on workplaces it contributes to our understanding of intelligence as a concept
and how individuals subjectively perceive it. We can integrate this perspective into our
data collection and analysis process to frame research questions and provide cultural
context to our study. Although it may not be used as a source for the Literature Review
section it indirectly enhances the depth and richness of our components, enabling us to
capture the multifaceted nature of emotional intelligence, in work settings.
4. Ivanov, S., Seyitoğlu, F., & Markova, M. (2020). Hotel managers’ perceptions towards the use
of robots: a mixed-methods approach. Information Technology & Tourism, 22, 505-535.
In their research article, Ivanov, Seyitoğlu and Markova utilize a mixed methods
approach to examine how hotel managers perceive the integration of robots in the
hospitality industry. While their study focuses on a research topic it serves as an example
of how a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods can be effectively
employed in research. The authors seamlessly blend analysis from surveys with
interviews to gain a holistic understanding of hotel managers’ attitudes towards the use of
robots in their field. By incorporating both types of data they uncover not sentiments but
also delve into the nuanced experiences and beliefs that shape these perceptions.

Within the context of our proposed research Ivanov et al.s study provides a reference for
demonstrating how a mixed methods approach can be practically applied. Although our
specific research questions may differ, this article showcases how combining qualitative
data can lead to a comprehensive understanding of a phenomenon. This aligns with our
research design, which seeks to explore the relationship between intelligence and
workplace productivity by blending both types of data. We can refer to this article in the
Methods section of our proposal as an illustration of techniques for collecting and
analyzing data, in tandem. Moreover, it emphasizes the significance of using a
combination of qualitative methods to capture both patterns and contextual
understandings, which aligns with the suggested research methodology.
