PY525: Personality Assessment

Jennifer Whitcomb, Ph.D., LPC, LMFT

October 5, 2021

Reason for Referral and Background History:

I am a 45-year-old African American female. I have been divorced for 2 years and have 2 children and a grandchild. I attend the University of West Alabama. My major is Psychology and Counseling in Adult education. My final research paper required me to take two self-assessment tests, the Myers Briggs Personality Assessment, and the Beck Depression. These tests can assess my personality and depression concerning my mental health and wellness. I have no family history of mental illness.

Evaluation Procedures:

The following assessments have been recommended in my Personality Assessment class by my instructor, Dr. Whitcomb. I was scored by using the Myers Briggs Personality Assessment online that contains 130 questions about my personality. The questionnaire can be administered via Truity.com. I scored myself with the Beck Depression using pencil scoring. It contained 21 multiple choice questions.

Behavioral Observations:

I took both at home in my office. I was feeling relaxes and calm while taking both tests. I had on a short sleeve’s yellow blouses with a pair of jeans on. I am right-handed. I was not nervous or worried while taking the test. The entire test I was attentive and alert of all questions and understood the questions and the task of the tests. I was not fully oriented during that time. I was very excited and motivated about the tests. Both tests are considered valid assessment of by personality types and depression level.

Assessment Results:

The Myers Briggs Personality Assessment scored my personality as an ENFJ. The E stands for extraversion, I stand for intuition, F is for feelings and sentiment, and J stands for judgment. It describes me as a warm person that is forthright and loving, does not mine helping others, and tend to have strong ideas and values. ENFJs are idealist organizers, driven to implement their vision of what is best for humanity. They often act as catalysts for human growth because of their ability to see potential in other people and their charisma in leading others. It scored me as 28% Introverted and 72% as an Extravert. This means I am primarily focused outward, on the world around me. I seek stimulation and activity and enjoy busy environments. I am energized by activity and by interacting with other people. I tend to be talkative and express yourself easily. All these things are true. I scored 46% Sensing and 54% Intuition. My energy style is a blend of Sensing and Intuition, and as such, I am neither a pure Sensor nor a pure Intuitive. Because I do show a slight preference for Intuition, I can be classified as an Intuitive type. However, it’s more accurate to say that I am a bit of both Sensor and Intuitive: I tend to use both styles in processing information, and I may switch from one to the other depending on the demands of your environment. It also scored me as 45% Thinking and 55% Feeling. My values style is a blend of Thinking and Feeling, and as such, I am neither an absolute Thinker nor an absolute Feeler. Because I do show a slight preference for Feeling, I can be classified as a Feeler type. However, it’s more accurate to say that I am a bit of both Thinker and Feeler.

The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was developed by the American psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck in 1961. Today, this technique is one of the most used psychometric tests to determine the degree of depression and the dynamics of its change. I scored 1-10 which means there are ups and downs and are considered normal. My results state my depression level is considered normal.

Recommendations and Summary:

After completing the assessment exercise, I have been able to determine my personality type according to the Myers Briggs Personality Assessment and the Beck Depression Inventory determine my depression level. I agree with the assessment tests of myself. I gave both tests my best effort in answering all questions truthfully while maintaining a positive attitude throughout the time. the MBTI assessment is playing a part in the vision laid out by Briggs and Myers, helping people understand and appreciate themselves and others.
