Respond to two of your colleagues’ posts and explain how your colleague’s codes are similar or different than yours.

BRENDA

Good afternoon,

For this discussion, Benjamin Isaac’s video Inspiring Children with Special Needs was selected for review. In this video, Mr. Isaac explained he is seeking to create an educational video with the purpose of normalizing the special needs some children have. Mr. Isaac stated this video is not for the purpose of asking for sympathy, but rather to showcase children are normal children with some special characteristics. Mr. Isaac stated he is using the opportunity to learn at Walden University about research-based techniques to incorporate into his video and to leverage technology to reach a wide audience.

In his discussion, Mr. Isaac started off by using research-based facts, provided a definition of the word “special”, and repeatedly used the word special with a positive connotation rather than presenting special needs as a hindrance or disability. Mr. Isaac shared his own children have special needs and those special qualities serves to give them a different perspective on life; thus, Mr. Isaac created a couple of the characters in his video after his own children and had the children voice the characters.

When considering possible codes that could emerge from this video, I would start off with “normalize special needs”, as this is a recurring statement made by Mr. Isaac and he regularly uses the word special. This is the overall goal of Mr. Isaac, to influence and reach others with this video, so this would be an important code to have when entering the data analysis phase.

Description of Video

Benjamin Isaac is a doctoral student in special education at Walden University (Isaac, 2014). He highlights that, despite the word “special,” students with special needs often feel belittled or inferior. To challenge this narrative, Benjamin introduces three characters – Skeeter, Buzz, and Gigi – from an educational children’s show combining live actors with 3D animation that he has created. Each character represents a different condition: Autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy, respectively. Adding a layer of authenticity to his project, the voices behind these characters are children who possess these conditions. The show aims to present these characters leading typical lives, subtly conveying that their conditions don’t define them. Benjamin hopes that with the knowledge gained from Walden University, he can infuse the show with evidence-based educational content about special learning needs. His vision is not just to inspire and empower children with special needs but also to enlighten the global audience about the inherent value of children who are special.

Coding

Social Change = “Walden University has helped me develop this show into an entertaining piece of media with the potential to educate the world about the true nature of children with special needs.”

Representation = “To add authenticity to each character, I decided to have each character voiced by a child that had that same condition.”

Reasoning for Coding

Being a part of social change is inherently coming from a place of vulnerability. Isaac shows not only how it intends to be an agent of change but also how this topic impacts him personally. With many of the themes I noticed from this week’s video, it seemed these two rang true through most of his video, whether it was personal perspective, the need for diversity, or the desire for a more inclusive society.
