Global Psychology Researcher – Interview

Florida International University

When I started this course, I was aware of the differences that’s exist regarding gender, culture, race, sexuality, beliefs and all the aspects that make each one of us unique but this course has helped me male a connection between all of these characteristics and understand our behavior and thoughts in a cross cultural way. I am now able to give myself another explanation when someone says or acts in a different way that I would. This is to our differences in culture and worldview. Every one of us come from different backgrounds since even if you were born and raised in the same place your family may have had a different culture, beliefs and habits which made you think different, and this happens to every person. Experiences in life can also shape your identity and even become a different person. Learning new things is another aspect that can change your mindset, as this class has changed mine. It has given me a new perception about society and a better understanding of human behavior.

I feel relieved to know that the actions of other people are not personally intended towards anyone in specific. Some people behave in a certain way because that is how they are used to be treated or that’s what they learned from their parents or relatives. If someone gets into the elevator with you and does not say Hi it is not because of you it may be because in their culture, they do not talk to strangers or in public places. We do not have to take everything so personal since everyone has their own mindset with their own beliefs and this course has provided me that understanding.

In order to have a better understanding of how culture can influence in a person’s worldview I decided to interview a person that shares my same cultural background, but I find to have different ideas and thoughts. The questions on the interview were the following:

· How would you describe your gender?

· male

· What is your sexual orientation

· I like females

· How old are you?

· 22

· Are you currently in school?

· yes

· What are your religious beliefs

· I am Christian

· Do you have any disability

· no

· What is your employment status?

· I have a fulltime employment

· Are you or anyone in your family a veteran?

· No

After conducting the interview, I concluded that even though this person and I do not share the same background, gender, sexual orientation or religious beliefs we do have in common social factors that influence our worldview. I think this is because even though we have different backgrounds since I am Cuban and he is American, his parents are also Cuban and as stated in the article written by Abu Salih et al “Affect communication and regulation patterns can be transmitted across generations in early-life socialization with caregivers” (2023). This explains the similarities in our worldview even though we were not born or raised in the same place, but his parents taught him their Cuban’s habits and beliefs.

I decided to talk about a little more about how the interviewed felt that their employment status could affect his mental health since this is a topic that I think should get more attention specially in college and university students. The interviewed explained to me how working and having time to study at the same time was hard to manage for himself since the more he worked, the less time to study he had and vice versa. This is a point that I share the same opinion and I think most of us do regardless of our cultural background, race or gender and this is something that does affect our mental health since we leave ourselves no time for doing things that makes us happy or bring us peace. This does not include everyone since not all of us has the same economic status but as mentioned in the article by Adedeji, A., et al “Research on socioeconomic status (SES) suggests that individual subjective life evaluation, health behavior, and treatment may differ based on their economic position” (2023).
