Given my current position in working with surgical patients and as a member of an evidence-based journaling committee, I have chosen to explore the Association for Operating Room Nurses (AORN). I have read some of their journal articles from my colleagues on the committee and found them highly intriguing. AORNs mission statement states: “AORN defines, supports, and advocates for patient and staff safety through exemplary practice in all phases of perioperative nursing care using evidence-based guidelines, continuing education, and clinical practice resources.” (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, 2020) They offer many benefits, including access to educational resources and preparation for potential career advancements. They offer access to the AORN journal with peer-reviewed evidence-based articles, Periop Insider newsletters with current events, and news regarding perioperative practice. As well as courses that help prepare for the CNOR exam to become a certified perioperative nurse. A division of the AORN even offers access to continuing education which is essential to maintaining licensure. Pfiedler Education provides continuing education for perioperative nurses, surgical technicians, sterile processing, and radiologic technologists. They deliver these materials through webinars, live events, and eLearning courses, making it easy to meet your learning styles. They also award academic scholarships and grants for certifications, professional development, and research, so what’s not to love? Maybe the cost. Membership fees differ based on the type of membership you would like to have. According to the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (2023), they offer “New to Profession Membership” beginning at $50 for the first year and increasing to $99 in subsequent years, “Standard Membership” due of $170 and a monthly subscription option of $15.50 per month, “Leader Membership” with dues of $225, a “Group Membership” with to-be-determined fees, “Retired Membership” or a partnered membership with American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association (APSNA) for due of $235 or with “leader benefits” of $290. The flexibility of these options is enticing, but the prices are steep.

I plan on joining a professional nursing organization but have not determined which organization would be the right fit. The AORN would provide me with many opportunities for professional growth, with grants for certifications and resources for continued education, leadership, and shared governance. These opportunities align well with the qualities integrated into my facility’s mission, vision, and values statements. I work at a Magnet-Recognized teaching facility, and they pride themselves on compassion, education, and innovation; however, the membership price is a big commitment, and the continuing education is focused solely on surgical specialties. I would potentially like to obtain continuing education on other topics of interest.

I chose the professional organization of the Emergency Nurses Association. At this time of my career, I am an Emergency Room nurse. I value this important role in the hospital and in my community. I also am most comfortable here, so I felt that this was good start in understanding Emergency Room management and what other directions I would like to explore for my future in nursing. The mission statement for this organization is ‘to advance excellence in emergency nursing” (ENA, 2023). This statement is more specific for the Emergency Room Nurse, juxtaposed to the general statement of HCA Healthcare of ” Above all else we are committed to the care and improvement of human life” (HCA Healthcare, 2023). All human life is important, however I most identify with HCA’s mission statement as I want to improve and care for human life in whatever department I work in.

The ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) vision is “to be the premier organization of the emergency nursing community worldwide” (ENA, 2023). The yearly cost is $115.00 is a reasonable price as I plan on joining this organization. There are many benefits in joining, including exceptional educational benefits. Continual Education is quite costly. ENA offers over “30+ hours free, over $300.00” (ENA, 2023) in continuing credits education. There are additional benefits of printed publications with relative practices in Emergency patient care, annual conference discounts, exam discounts, and community connections with other Emergency disciplines with tools and resources related to emergency room nursing.
