1. What are the main components of your online course, including a minimum of three course
goals?

Cennamo & Kalk (2019) suggest that designing a course for online learners is very important

because an educator is required to produce course learning materials before learning starts. I

agree with the author because it is difficult to change the learning materials once students have

enrolled and the course is ongoing. Therefore, to ensure all my course elements align and avoid

time wastage, I will apply a model known as the course design triangle. This model is based on

three principles, which I will consider as the main components of my online course. The first

component is learning objectives. These are the goals that students should know and achieve

by the end of the course. Therefore, my course goals include, first, students should understand

how to use language to capture the audience’s attention. Second, students understand how to

develop evidence-based arguments. Third, students should demonstrate the ability to theory,

research, and practice.

The second component is assessments. These are the activities that students will perform to

gauge their understanding after covering each learning goal or objective. I will apply two types

of assessments. First, summative assessments, such as final exams, class assignments, quizzes,

module discussions and summaries, and multiple choice exams, and ask students to critique

their colleague’s discussions after they post theirs. Second, formative assessments, such as self-

checks, rough drafts, and concept maps.

Third, instructional strategies. One of the strategies is copyright compliance. I will always follow

the fair use guidelines. The second strategy is accessibility. I will always consider the variety of

students I will be teaching. For instance, students with disabilities. The last strategy is observing

professionalism. I will always use my own instructional materials and treat all students equally

without discrimination.

2. What are the characteristics of your online learners, and what are three distinctive needs or
challenges they may face as online learners?

Characteristics of my online learners include, first, knowing how to use their laptops or phone

to type, upload or download necessary materials. Second, know how to compose and respond

to an email. Third, know how to present work using PowerPoint slides. Fourth, know how to

access Canvas and other learning systems such as Blackboard. I hope learning will be smooth,

but I can’t ignore that my learners may face different challenges. Some of the challenges

include distractions, lack of motivation since they won’t be attending class physically, technical

issues due to internet failure and computer shutdown, and some students may be left behind

and be discouraged and frustrated.

3. What are six relevant and meaningful learning outcomes for your course?

The first learning outcome is to discuss various literary techniques and identify creative to use

them in the English language. The second outcome is to help learners know to choose the right

language for specific audiences. The third outcome is to help learners know how to develop

thesis statements and support their writing with in-text citations. This outcome will be very

crucial because learners will understand how to avoid plagiarism by paraphrasing or citing other

people’s ideas or outside sources using different styles. For instance, MLA, Harvard, APA,

Chicago, and Vancouver. The fourth outcome is to identify themes and discuss their importance

in the literature. The fifth outcome is for learners to discuss their writing experiences and set

goals. The sixth outcome is to learn how to use relevant theoretical concepts in literature and

practice the same.

4. Which primary learning theory do you propose to apply to ensure students achieve the
outcomes, and what is your rationale for choosing this theory?

Bernacki, Greene & Crompton (2020) suggest that it is important that educators learn different

ways of teaching students. I believe that teachers can be in a position to use different teaching

techniques by understanding learning theories. Based on the above outcome, I would apply

cognitive learning theory to ensure all my students achieve the listed outcome. I would use this

theory to help my students have a high stake in their learning. This is because they would be in

a position to understand how their thinking impacts their learning and behaviors. Chew &

Cerbin (2021) found that cognitive learning theory helps students learn on their own because

they understand their thoughts. Therefore, I hope to utilize this theory and provide my students

an opportunity to ask questions for them to understand how their thought process works, and

accomplish the stipulated course outcomes.

5. What are three effective strategies to motivate students in the online environment, and what
makes these strategies motivational for students?

The first strategy is to provide meaningful and honest feedback. I believe this will motivate my student

because they will be able to know the truth about their performance and ask for help so that they can

take the necessary steps to improve their performance. The second strategy is to personalize learning. I

will do so hoping to help my students become responsible for their learning. This will motivate them by

helping them choose the direction that best fits them because they’re responsible for their learning

outcomes. The third strategy is to encourage willing students to work together. Students will use the

online discussion platform to discuss topics covered in class and ask each other questions. I believe this

will motivate them because those left behind during online classes will catch up with other students by

learning from their colleagues.
