Overview
Cyber-bullying and suicide have become an increasing reality among young generation. Based on case study 4.2 in Kremling and Parker (2018), this assignment gives you opportunity to examine ethical dilemma and discuss ethical decisions.
“There are many cases of suicide due to cyberbullying that have made the news. Some of these remain in the headlines either because family members started an antibullying foundation or simply because of the horrific details of the case. One of those cases was that of Megan Meier. Meier, a 13-year-old teenager, met 16-year-old Josh online via MySpace. At the time, Megan suffered from attention deficit disorder, depression, and weight issues. Megan and Josh chatted regularly via MySpace but never met in person. Megan believed that Josh really cared about her and believed that she was pretty. Over time, Josh’s messages to Megan became hostile and demeaning. He told her he did not want to be friends anymore and “that the world would be a better place without her.” Other classmates started to post mean messages about Megan on MySpace. After reading these messages, Megan went into her room and hanged herself in the closet. Investigations by the police found that Josh was actually the mother (Lori Drew) of one of her classmates.
Research on the consequences of cyberbullying shows that 20% of the victims seriously considered suicide. Cyberbullying victims are twice as likely as youth who were not bullied to have attempted suicide. Cyberbullying victims also often had other emotional and social issues. These issues typically contributed to their victimization by making them an easy target”. (Kremling & Parker, 2018, p. 86)
