· Describe how the policy empowered you, your family member(s), or your client to take action.
· Or describe how you understood the policy to be deliberately intended to create a specific result.

RESPONSE1
The policy that I have chosen is the Family and Medical Leave Act. I have seen this policy empower individuals to take leave from work to care for themselves or a family member in times of need. This policy has also made individuals feel more secure in their jobs, knowing they will not be fired for taking the time to recover from an illness or care for a family member. This policy affects social work practice by providing a safety net for individuals needing to take time off to care for themselves or a family member.
· Employees of companies covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act are eligible for unpaid, job-protected leave for specific family and medical reasons”.
· Every government agency, elementary and secondary school in the country, and private company with 50 or more employees must comply with the FMLA.
· Many people have used the FMLA to take the time necessary to care for themselves or a family member without fear of losing their job. Due to this policy, individuals have also felt more comfortable in their work, knowing that they would not be fired for taking time off to recuperate from an illness or care for a family member. The FMLA has benefitted social work practice by providing a safety net for those who require time off work to care for themselves or a family member.
· The FMLA has effectively assisted people in taking the time needed to care for themselves or a family member. However, the FMLA has certain limitations. One of the primary disadvantages is that the FMLA only applies to businesses with 50 or more workers. This implies that many small enterprises are not compelled to give workers the same job-protected leave that more giant corporations do. Another disadvantage of the FMLA is that it only applies to specific family and medical reasons. Employees may be unable to take time off for other reasons, like caring for a sick family member or dealing with a personal issue, as a result.
· Despite its shortcomings, the FMLA has effectively allowed many people to take the time they need to care for themselves or a family member. The FMLA has benefitted social work practice by providing a safety net for those who require time off work to care for themselves or a family member.

Discussion 2
Identify one policy that has affected you, a family member(s), colleagues, or a client
A policy that has affected myself is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). TANF is a public assistance program that provides participants with a monthly income paid from general-revenue funds after experiencing economic difficulties (DiNitto & Johnson, 2016). In order to qualify for this program you must meet certain income criteria. Furthermore, participants are required to work a certain number of hours to solidify their earnings if they do not have employment, unless they are pregnant, have an infant, or are disabled.
Describe how the policy empowered you, your family member(s), or your client to take action.
As a newly recovering addict in residential treatment, I was provided the option to participate in the TANF program. Due to the nature of my addiction, and legal consequences I had received, I did not have anyone to assist me financially. I was completely dependent on the system as I neared the end of my pregnancy. I continued on this program for approximately six months after my child was born. The assistance I received from this was very empowering, as I had been unable to obtain employment while in treatment, and once completed I struggled to get a job due to my background. TANF provided me with a sense of independence while building my self esteem enough to eventually seek gainful employment. Without the assistance of this program, I firmly believe I would have ended up in the same vicious cycle of criminal activity to support meeting my basic needs for myself and my child. The hours I worked via JFS to compensate my benefits helped me build a work ethic that carries through to present day.
Explain how your understanding of this connection between the policy and its result relates to social work practice.
The connection between the TANF policy and its results can be related to social work practice in regards to focusing on a strengths based narrative. Social work practice involves working with clients that are facing some type of barrier, hardship, or need. TANF promotes the workforce by placing participants in skill related positions focusing on their strengths. It meets a need for self sufficiency for participants. Social work also offers assistance, in some form, to clients to further progress clients in tackling their individual barriers and needs.
