Critical Thinking in Action

Introduction

VUCA was initially introduced by United States Army War College. Currently, VUCA is utilized to motivate the development of business regions and inspiring leaders, employees and others. The main purpose of this document is to analyze how Panera Bread resolved the mosh pit issue and involved the VUCA notion and coming up with solutions to minimize client time of waiting (Kallet, 2014). Please note that the main purpose of this paper is to learn from Panera’s problem and to use the knowledge gained to focus on another problem of your choice. The paper will as address how Nokia failed to incorporate VUCA to their organization as well as offer the best recommendation. I Academic papers needs to be written in third person. Please see my Welcome Announcement. Please note that this is the only assessment that you need to write in third person for this course. will finally discuss the relevance of thinking critically and VUCA notion of a business leader.

In your introduction you also need to discuss how Panera used critical thinking. Please note that critical thinking and VUCA are two different tools.

Panera Bread Situation

Panera Bread had an issue since there were long lines, and clients were complaining of a long wait on the queue. Ron Shaich, who was the chief executive, realized that the clients were undergoing “mosh pit.” The worst part about this issue was the fact that the clients would receive services and sometimes get that they received the wrong products. The utilization of VUCA strategy, St. Louis foundation chain established resolution, which included the method of online ordering. There existed uncertainties since to make the online ordering process functional. However, the process eventually runs smoothly. The online complexity for ordering was significant for Panera Bread clients. The notion of ordering online brought more clients to the organization and also attracted the interest of shareholders (Lamberg et al., 2019). The organization then shifted to a more fruitful idea of delivering the ordered products to the customers.

The best recommendation is that the mobile order receiver to advance clients experience and reduce the waiting time. Mobile orders allow one to take all the customer’s requirements to the exact location of the client and immediately receive payments from the client. This strategy will minimize the time for waiting since the service would instruct the kitchen on the given order. Chick-Fil-A is the best example when it deals with the client’s satisfaction. Chick-Fil-A have workers using the mobile order tool to get rid of the wait time as well as minimize traffic in the restaurant. This system is also motivating clients to install the system app where clients can place an order before reaching at the outpost local point and picking the order from the designated counter without waiting on the line (Paul & Elder, 2019). A perk is also doing this where the customer receives some points for every food they purchase from the online platform. Including this, to Panera Bread strategy, there is a chance of offering clients with individualized and convenient experience.

Nokia

The other organization I selected was the Nokia Company. This company was crown as the world leader dealing with the market of mobile phones. Nokia is a communication organization that was a market leader in the past, but the company has fallen off because of competition from organizations such as Samsung and Apple. However, since 2007 their products were battery was said to be defective. Apple represents the use of VUCA since it is always a step ahead of it is always keeping up with the trend. Nokia has lost its customers since they are never up to date with the present technology (Van Phan & Horneman, 2017). If the company had a visionary leader, they would have won the market competition, which means that there is a need for the organization to focus more on getting a good leader.

It is apparent that Nokia has a problem with being innovative.

Critical Thinking

Through critical thinking, a leader can benefit much because it improves decision-making and problem-solving skills. When tools of critical thinking are utilized during various problem reviewing one gets new ideas and perspectives. Critical thinking helps a leader in making decisions and creating goals. The critical thinking framework includes; conclusion, decision, and clarity. Clarity aids in comprehending the issue, conclusion aids in planning the next step, which brings about making of the decision.

Please be sure to apply Nokia’s problem to the critical thinking framework.

Where is your:

to describe an evidence-based recommendation for this company to improve. You can create your own unique recommendation, or show how critical thinking applied to a solution that someone else came up with already or applied, which you read about in your research (1–3 paragraphs).

VUCA

You require to be thinking outside the box and to have the skills of solving a problem when dealing with VUCA. For a company like Nokia and Panera Bread to reduce its effects, it needs to comprehend ambiguous challenges and have strategies in place. Both companies require complexity in their planning procedure, which needs clarity (Vuori & Huy, 2016). Uncertainties will influence their organization by improving their skills, which is either strategy or critical thinking skills. The model of VUCA is a wonderful symbol for the leaders who need to steer their companies through troubled waters and turbulent.

Please be sure to discuss how all four elements of VUCA could affect the problem and then discuss how all four elements of VUCA could affect your recommendation.

Conclusion

For readiness in leading in a complex environment, enterprises heads require to detect patterns in what is trendy with the larger picture, and also the ability to understand the particulars while being supple enough to familiarize to the needs of the personal market. Panera Bread did a better job with integrating ideas of VUCA. However, I think Panera Bread would acquire more benefits through orders of mobiles from device takers. The failure of Nokia was because they lacked to incorporate the significance of software; rather, it focused on its physical appearance. The reaction of Nokia was too slow to the changes in the world. Incorporating critical thinking by leaders should be important in enterprises where it aids in improving employee productivity and relations with customers.

As stated above, your main focus needs to be on Nokia and its problem. All discussion about Panera is typically only in the introduction. You review the Panera problem to gain knowledge from others’ experiences to help you resolve other problems.

Please review the instructions, the scoring guide, and my comments above as you start on your editing process. Doing this will help you to address that is required.

This assessment is a great learning experience. You get to learn how a leader can use other organizations’ solutions to problems, along with learning what is needed for assessments and how to use the instructions and scoring guide to your benefit.

Please see my comments below and in your graded assessment that is attached. (Please note that is you are using the Capella App, you will need to enter the courseroom via the website to see and view the attachment.)

* DO NOT WRITE IN NEW TOPIC *

Write a 3-page academic paper in which you describe a business situation, apply a critical thinking framework to the situation, and recommend evidence-based solutions to the situation. Explain how the concepts of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) could affect both the situation and the solution.

Introduction

This portfolio work project will give you practice with academic writing expectations, while still being work relevant. Many organizations have relationships with professional associations and contribute written articles regularly to newsletters and other publications. In addition, some organizations expect leaders to participate in conferences and seminars, where written work must be submitted using an academic style.

While you are playing the role of a new leader in an organization, remember that you are also writing a paper that will be evaluated by an instructor. Thus, you want to make it easy for the instructor to clearly see that you have demonstrated the outcomes of the assessment. Do not make your instructor search for information; guide them to it. How? By double-checking the scoring guide and ensuring that you have clearly demonstrated each of these competencies at what you believe is the Distinguished level.

Read the following and think about how Panera used critical thinking and an understanding of VUCA to solve their mosh pit problem. Pay attention to Kallet’s critical thinking framework in particular.

Then, find another company with a problem they need to fix. You may use NASA, BP, or United Airlines, all of whom have had numerous high-profile problems to solve in recent years, if you wish. Or, you may choose a company that you know has an issue. If you are unsure who to use, try searching “Companies with customer service problems” online and you will get a lot of ideas, though your problem does not have to be about customer service.

In an APA-formatted paper:

  1. Summarize the problem you researched. Then, apply Kallet’s critical thinking framework to describe how the leadership of this company should think through the problem to create a solution. Finally, give at least one evidence-based solution—either that you came up with through your research or that you read the company is going to or did employ. Next, describe what VUCA considerations the leadership must keep in mind as they implement this solution.
  2. Work on being concise but thorough, keeping academically formatted paper to no more than four double-spaced pages.
  3. Be sure your paper includes, and is organized, as follows:
    • Introduction: Write an introduction that tells the reader what to expect of this paper (1 paragraph). It would be most effective to include a brief mention that leaders at Panera Bread effectively used an understanding of critical thinking and VUCA to solve their mosh pit problem and that this paper applies a similar framework to solving whatever problem in the organization you chose. Choose an organization with a problem you can research.
    • Problem: Describe the problem that you will be solving for another company, describing the situation (1–3 paragraphs).
    • Thinking Critically: Apply the framework for critical thinking as outlined by Michael Kallet in the Think Smarter e-book to the problem you identified to describe an evidence-based recommendation for this company to improve. You can create your own unique recommendation, or show how critical thinking applied to a solution that someone else came up with already or applied, which you read about in your research (1–3 paragraphs).
    • Applying VUCA: Explain how VUCA could affect both the situation and your recommendation, and any important considerations for management in implementing the recommended solution (1–2 paragraphs).
    • Conclusion: Write a conclusion that wraps up and summarizes your document (1 paragraph). The Capella Writing Center, linked in the MBA Program Resources under Writing Skills, has good information on how to write an effective conclusion.
    • References: Include at least two APA-formatted citations in your paper.
