Wills, Barbi Week 3: Ageism and Implicit Bias

The most common result on the Age Implicit Association Test (IAT) was a 30% strong and moderate automatic preference for young people compared to old people. This was not surprising to me as the media floods us with images of beautiful, thin, young people. This gives the impression that being young is the ideal we should all aspire to. Some doctors are trained to provide services that make the older person look younger and companies have focused their marketing efforts on products that prevent us from looking older. Skincare is a common focus as we are told the sun ages our skin, but the makeup industry promotes the “sun-kissed” effect through bronzers and highlighters.  Years age our skin, the sun provides nutrients needed to prevent diseases such as scurvy and seasonally affected depression. However, the sun’s ultraviolet rays (Cleveland Clinic, n.d.) damage skin cells and contribute to the appearance of aging.

In American culture, movies and TV shows depict older people as wise people who sit around and wait for the younger people to come and ask for advice which is usually given through anecdotes, quips, or riddles making the older person seem to have dementia or removed from the reality of the current situation. This implicit bias is propagated by the media and their depiction of the older generation (Daniel S Busso, 2019). If an older person is active in a storyline, they are typically rich and depicted as puppet masters pulling the strings of the younger people to do their bidding. If they are active, they are not considered normal. The reality is that we treat our senior citizens quite differently; they are given the same regard as babies and toddlers. We check on them, make sure they have eaten, drive them around, and generally act as if they are too weak to survive without assistance.

By shifting our mindsets and acknowledging the assets older people contribute to our communities, places of work, and family units, we will be able to capitalize on that historical data and adjust decisions and plans based on that valuable information (Kita, 2019). If businesses encouraged a shift in mandatory retirement and focused more on ensuring their workers regardless of age were placed in the right jobs to capitalize on their expertise and talents, the bias could be mitigated. Changing recruiting slogans and methods (Kita, 2019) is a great way to start changing the face of ageism in companies. This change would be beneficial for the companies and their communities because the diversity in the community would be mirrored in the corporate structure.
