I’m pretty sure we have all had that one shift where we just wanted to give up. I also feel confident that there were times in your career when you asked yourself, “ Why did I pick this job?”. Burnout affects nurses, and patients can also suffer (Ball et al., 2020). Having seen how different hospitals implement their nursing residencies, I was disappointed to see that not too much time is focused on coping strategies. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think nurses in their first year are the most vulnerable to elevated emotional stress. I came up with my project because of this. While collecting data and analyzing research, I have found that nursing recognizes the potential for burnout, and various institutions have strategies for nurses. Still, no research I found discussed introducing these coping strategies to first-year nurses. I would have implemented it in multiple hospitals if I could change anything in my project. I currently work at a hospital that is NOT part of a larger system like Kaiser or Providence. Conducting this pilot project at one hospital doesn’t provide a large sample size. Faber and Fonseca reiterate this fact by reporting, “Very small samples undermine the internal and external validity of a study (2014)”. To ensure the validity of my project, I would want to implement it at multiple hospitals, where they use the same nursing residency curriculum but feature a different staff population (rural vs. suburban vs. urban).

Research topic: Comparing pre-licensure nursing students for NCLEX pass rates between students who traditionally went to school in-person versus those who spent nursing school online with social distancing restrictions.
Initially my topic was going to be looking at the new grads that had distance learning and how they performed at the bedside post licensure. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find enough research to support the topic so it morphed into how well these students are prepared to sit for NCLEX. But my initial motivation stemmed from the new grads that I trained after the pandemic. Day one in the ER with a new grad, I had to teach one how to prime a bag of normal saline. So far the data is interesting! There’s a good amount of literature out there that state the students feel like they have good or better education as a result of distance learning (Brendan et al., 2023; Hung et al., 2021; Iheduru-Anderson et al., 2022; Martin et al., 2023). But when you look at the publicly available NCEX pass rates for the pandemic period, the pass rates were actually lower for the distance learning test takers and the difference is almost 10% when you compare 2019 and 2021 ADN first time pass rates (NCSBN, 2020). This showcases why I tend to personally favor quantitative research over qualitative. Would I do anything different? Other than wait until there is more publicized research for my original intended topic, nope!
