ANDREW’S POST:

I think social policy effects children’s development on a daily basis via the agencies that are helping families come out of poverty and lead healthier lives. Because children cannot control finances or their own circumstances, the most direct way for someone outside of their homes to impact their lives would be to get involved in the parents’ lives and by providing economic support. If parents have better housing, higher education, and more financial resources, this directly benefits in the lives and wellbeing of their children.

Secondly, I think the incentive to increase social capital effects children’s lives and development on a daily basis by promoting a more positive social environment around the children. Having a sense of community in good friends, neighbors, religious groups and schools can lead to resiliency and an overall better outlook on life.

JALISA’S POST:

I think that a child’s housing would play a big part in social policy because kids that are living in poverty are more likely to become depressed and interacts less than middle class kids. The reason being is that kids that are living in poverty are less likely to do the things kids living in mid class can do. They will also development things like anxiety throughout the years. If there is only one parent present that child has less emotional support. I also think that a child’s health may play a big part in social policy because some kids may have different disabilities causing them to interact slower than other kids their age.

ARLNDA’S POST:

The author effectively describes her “hunger” as someone who is embarrassed about their body and how others think of her. ” I weighed 577 pounds at six feet, three inches tall. That is a staggering number, one I can hardly believe, but at one point, that was the truth of my body.”, as she stated she felt that if it wasn’t normal for someone to weigh that much as she did. She was wondering how she let herself go and felt as if she knew.

Roxane Gay was inside of a clinic describing how she felt “My father went with me to Cleveland clinic in Weston, Florida.” which was a clinic that performed surgeries for people who wanted to lose weight. She felt that he would help her make the best decision for herself and her body. Gay father was able to attend the orientation with her, they felt that the procedure was a great idea until they watched a video that was shown for orientation. Her father stated that she could work on her body herself by doing workouts.

After the orientation and one on one section, Gay felt like she wanted to go for the body she wanted “I pored over the pamphlets I had received, unable to look away from the before/after pictures. I wanted, I still want, that after so bad sadly.” Roxane knew that she wasn’t ready for the procedure but knew that she had to find a way to the body she needed. Gay also, knew that after getting the body she wanted she had to find ways to forget the times of feeling embarrassment and shameful. Gay knew that she had to accept her body even if it wasn’t the one, she wanted.

The title of the chapter 1 is “What is Science?”, with the core concept stating; “Science is a way of thinking about and understanding your surroundings”.  After reading the chapter, watch the following youtube video of Professor Richard Feynman (a theoretical physicist) answering a question by an interviewer:

After doing these things discuss what you think “scientific understanding” means.  Try to compare and contrast “scientific understanding” to the ideas of “truth’ and “certainty”.  Don’t worry, you can’t be right or wrong about this.  It is a participation grade and it is really for me to get an idea about your ideas.

There are certain requirements to fulfill in order to receive the maximum credit for class discussion participation.
