Must Read Everything:

Reply to at least two classmate’s posts, applying the RISE Model for Meaningful Feedback

I will also show an example below of how the response needs to be addressed.

Here’s an example of how the response should look. Please don’t copy it.

The response to the classmate need to be just like this.

Example Response (Response Needs to be writen just like the response below No copying)

RISE Feedback:

REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.

INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are?

SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts.

ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…”  for a more weighted argument?

Response 1 – Alejandra

  • dentify techniques that guide school counselors in addressing social/emotional needs.

I am a huge advocate for professional development opportunities. I think that we as social-emotional providers can always find something new to learn. In order to best address social/emotional needs in our short-term counseling, we need to learn and practice effective techniques. One approach I would love to learn more about implementing is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I have been a patient of DBT and found it extremely helpful for getting my life back on track when I was experiencing mental health challenges. Comprehensive DBT is time-consuming and takes 6 months to one year, and school counselors are not therapists, but it is possible to incorporate DBT concepts into our short-term practice, including concepts such as mindfulness, radical acceptance, and coping skills such as distraction techniques to tolerate distress.

  • Identify possible cultural and developmental expectations that might exist for Han, in Han and the Bully. What are some techniques for developing students’ skills for respecting other points of view? Reference the readings and website information provided this week.

One possible cultural expectation for Han might be to suffer in silence. He may feel that he will look weak if he speaks up. Therefore, it is very much a big deal that he spoke up about the mistreatment at school.

One technique for developing students’ skills for respecting other points of view is bibliocounseling, which we learned about last week. For example: having students read about the experience of an immigrant person in their own words. This may cause students to consider a perspective they had never considered before, and develop empathy and sympathy for the new point of view.

  • How would the situation be handled differently if Han was 7 years old?

In the case scenario, the counselor used simple language, and I would expect her to do the same if Han was younger. Maybe the counselor could have used a simpler analogy to help Han understand the concept.

Response 2- Marlene

  • Identify techniques that guide school counselors in addressing social/emotional needs.
    • There are many techniques to use such as positive reinforcement for desire behaviors’. Others can be approaches such as, solution focused, strength based, cheerleader. In address in the need it can be as simple as a flyer for a coping group. An Instragram post on school site, parent newsletter or in a lesson. Today when I did the personalities test tied with CCGI to identify possible majors/careers, I tied in how counselors can help with social emotional needs to school being overwhelming and how we are not just here for academics. I had a slide the went over all the duties school counselors do in mental health and the workshops we hold throughout the year.
  • Identify possible cultural and developmental expectations that might exist for Han, in Han and the Bully What are some techniques for developing students’ skills for respecting other points of view? Reference the readings and website information provided this week.
    • Culture norms for Han could be why it is the way he did. The book states that therapist should be aware that some cultures take great emphasis on non verbal communication, thus they are less likely to communicate in therapy (Brems, 2008). Therapist should not take it the wrong way. This can be a sign of respect and the student can show communication in other ways (Brems, 2008). Student might not know this, so lessons on cultural differences and respect would be a great way for students to develop respect for each other. Cultural days as well.
  • How would the situation be handled differently if Han was 7 years old?
    • Educating the student may help. I like to introduce myself, state they are not in trouble, and go over what the counseling dept. is all about when I first meet a kids, because i noticed 9 times out of 10 this is their first visit and have no idea what the counselor does. Also visuals are great for younger students even videos.
